The Belgian Malinois

Country of origin

The Belgian Malinois was bred in Belgium originally as sheepdogs and guard dogs, but are now more widely known to do police work, dog sports, herding and protection. The other three Belgian shepherds are the Laekenois, Groenendael and the Tervuren.

Size

These wonderful dogs are usually 22 to 26 inches tall and are 55 to 65 kilograms in weight. They have triangular ears, pointed muzzles, and squared-shape bodies. Their light built make them very agile and much faster than the German Shepherd Dog, which is another popular choice in police work.

Coat

Belgian Malinois are usually red, brown, or fawn in color with a black mask and black ears. They have short coats that shed seasonally.

Character

This breed is very intelligent and versatile, often living up to their handlers’ expectations in any task given to them. They have very protective instincts; so early socialization is crucial if they are destined to work in the police force. They are loyal dogs that make great house pets, especially for people who love outdoor activities such as biking or hiking. They are not recommended for first timers though, as they only tend to follow the commands of those who are firm and know how to take control, but at the same time are not harsh or violent.

Temperament

Belgian Malinois2                  Being instinctively protective, without proper socialization these dogs can be very suspicious of strangers and aggressive towards other dogs and small animals. But if introduced properly, they can live and get along well with others. They are excellent guard dogs that bark to alert, but at the same time can be confident when meeting strangers, with the ability to distinguish suspicious behavior from non-threatening behavior. This is also why they are one of the top choices to train as protection dogs. They are loyal and have high energy levels that need to be shed off with appropriate exercise. Although they can be good with children, there are times when their herding instincts can kick in because of kids’ quick and sudden movements. These behaviors (like nipping) should be discouraged, and the children must be taught how to properly interact with the dogs.

Care

These amazing dogs can live in apartments as long as they get enough exercise. Their smooth double coats need a weekly brush to keep healthy. Off-leash time in a fenced yard could also be beneficial for them, as they enjoy running due to their herding-related heritage.

Training

Belgian Malinois need a handler with a lot of experience and someone who can take the role of a leader. These are highly intelligent dogs with plenty of drive that if used properly, can turn them into excellent working dogs.

Activity

The Belgian Malinois is very active and can perform in all sorts of activities such as dog agility, fly ball, herding, obedience, and of course police work like tracking, shutzhund-related work, and even therapy work. They are also great at Frisbee and are an all around exercise buddy.

Bedlington Terrier: Is This the Right Breed For You?

Country of origin

This unique-looking dog originated from a mining shire in England called Bedlington, bred to hunt rats inside the mines. Previously known as the Rothbury terrier (named after the district of Rothbury), they were once used as well by gypsies to hunt small animals like foxes, badgers and rabbits. Despite their small size, these dogs are quite feisty and were used to fight underground in pits in the mines, and were pretty agile that they were also used for racing. The Bedlington Terrier Club was formed in the 1870’s.

Size

Bedlington Terrier2                  The Bedlington Terrier is usually 15 to 17 inches high and 8 to 10 kilograms in weight. They are very lamb-like in appearance and quite similar to the Dandie Dinmont Terrier and the Otterhound. They have a double coat, pear-shaped heads, low set ears, low tails, long back legs that causes them to have arched backs, and topknots (fur that gives them their unique look) on top of their heads.

Coat

Bedlington Terriers have both soft and rough hair that curls as it grows. They are usually white, liver, tan or blue. Their coats don’t need to be stripped, but requires regular brushing for maintainance.

Character

This breed is very energetic and playful and is a good choice for families with children, as they can also be gentle and sweet. You must remember to supervise all play though, as these dogs can only tolerate up to a certain extent. They are pretty fesity though when it comes to other dogs, and are not recommended for people with multiple pets, as they are very prone to getting into fights, especially with dominant dogs and dogs of the same gender. Their stubborn nature is also not good for this, because they tend to not back down when engaged in scuffles.

Temperament

These brave dogs are fond of barking, making them good guard dogs when it comes to alarming their owners of anyone’s arrival. They also love to run, and must be trained proper name recall in the unfortunate case that they break free from you. These dogs need to be exercised regularly as they have high levels of energy that can turn into frustration and destruction if not addressed.

Care

The Bedlington Terrier is ideal for those who want a dog with fur that undergoes minimal shedding. They need to be clipped and brushed regularly, though, to keep their fur in pristine condition. These dogs do not do well outdoors as they are very efficient escape artists. They can live in apartments (mostly due to their size) as long as they are exercised both physically and mentally everyday.

Training

These dogs are intelligent but not that easy to train because of their stubborn nature. Positive reinforcement would help persuade them though, because reward-based training will show them that they will get something in return of them following your commands.

Activity

Bedlington Terriers will be very happy with a daily jog, regular training, and play. They would be perfect to compete in dog sports such as Agility and fly ball as they have excellent speed.

This Poodle Dog was famous all throughout Europe for at least 400 years and is cleanly portrayed in many medieval paintings and in bas-relief from the 1st Century AD. Although, the subject of its original birthplace is still controversial as no one actually knows from where this dog breed originated. France eventually has taken claim to be the originating country of Miniature Poodle but AKC has actually rewarded the honor to Germany, where they states that the dog was a water retrieval canine.

However, the certain thing is that this breed is actually a descendant of an extinct French Water Dog Breed called the Barbet and possibly of the Hungarian Water Hound breed as well. Originally, the Poodle was used by the hunters in Germany and France as a gundog as well as a retriever of waterfowl and to snuffle out truffles hiding in the deep woods.

Size

Temperament

A refined Poodle who has been taught the manners of a canine quite well will appear with very calm temperament. However, to maintain this elegance in nature, make sure to give the Poodle its daily quota of exercise in order to shun off its natural energy well.

Care

All types of Poodles do exactly fine within any type of home, whether it?s apartment, estates or a house, and Miniature Poodle is no exception to it as well. However, only make sure that the dog gets enough of his exercise and human companionship in order to stay healthy and fine mentally as well.

Training

Poodles are one of the brightest in all of the dog breeds. They just love to be trained about numerous physical activities and are fairly sporty. However, the training should work with just a smile every here and then and leave the rest onto a Poodle.

Activity

Poodles are quite active dogs and specially a Miniature Poodle. They love to pounce on any sport they can and are just a tremendous gaming companion as well. With a high activity level in their blood, you can expect a long and healthy life from your Miniature Poodle.

American Bandogge Mastiff

Country of Origin

The American Bandogge Mastiff, which originated from the United States, is commonly a mix of the American Pitbull Terrier or the American Bulldog and a big Molosser like a Neopolitan or English Mastiff. They are huge, muscular dogs that were believed to be used in the war, dog fighting, dog sports, as well as bull baiting. Nowadays they are kept as pets, guard dogs in properties, and personal protection dogs.

Size

American Bandogge MastiffThese macho canines are usually 23 to 28 inches in height, and 35 to 60 kilograms in weight. American Bandogge Mastiffs are heavy-boned and highly athletic in built, with big heads, broad chests, and powerful jaws. They have thick necks, dark eyes, small to big ears, and compact muscles. All of these features make them very effective guard and protection dogs, as their appearance to begin with is very intimidating.

Coat

American Bandogge Mastiffs have short coats, which means that grooming them is a very easy and not-so-frequent task. They have a wide variety of coat colors such as yellow, red, black, blue and brindle.

Character

This powerful breed is so fearless that they will do anything to protect their families and their property. Although they can be quite stubborn especially if the owners do not know what they are doing, these dogs are very loyal, intelligent and are eager to please, making them trainable and good working dogs. They are dominant dogs that are not recommended for inexperienced owners, as they need a great deal of exercise, firm training, and a lot of socialization. For those who truly understand canine behavior and instincts, the American Bandogge Mastiff can be trained to be a perfect protection dog, and an excellent family pet that is very good-natured and fond of children.

Temperament

The American Bandogge Mastiff is a very confident dog that, when properly socialized, could be friendly and calm when meeting strangers and other dogs. Although very trustworthy toward people who pose no threat, this breed can turn into an entirely different dog when placed in a situation that would require him to protect his family. These dogs bite without a warning bark if they witness suspicious behavior from strangers that will urge them to attack.

Care

Being average shedders, these short-coated dogs only need to be brushed at least once a week. Bathing should be regular, but not excessive. They are suitable to any living condition as long as they get the proper exercise and training. They must be constantly challenged with mental stimulation and physical activities in order to stay balanced and happy. They must also be socialized at an early stage, all the way into adulthood. Failure to do so can cause them to develop aggression towards strangers and other dogs, as well as other species like small animals that can trigger their prey drive. Common health problems found in this breed are hip and elbow dysplasia, skin diseases, Bloat and Epilepsy.

Training

First time dog owners are not recommended to own an American Bandogge Mastiff, as they need someone who can effectively take the role of a pack leader. Positive reinforcement is good for these dogs, but at the same time the handler must know how to be firm and consistent with his commands. These are very intelligent dogs that like to pay attention, and if trained by a person who knows his stuff, can be a very obedient and controllable dog despite its massive size.

Activity

These versatile and powerful dogs can perform dog sports, protection training, Schutzhund and other work.

American Alsatian

Country of origin

The American Alsatian, once called the American Shepalute, originated from the United States in the 1870’s. These rare dogs, meant to resemble Dire Wolves, were founded by Lois Denny and were bred to be companion dogs. Although similar in appearance, wolf hybrids were not used in developing this breed, as Lois Denny wanted to create a large dog with a stable temperament, which is usually not apparent in wolf hybrids. Instead she used dogs that looked like wolves like the Alaskan Malamute and the German Shepherd Dog.

Size

American Alsatians are usually 25 to 28 inches in height and weigh between 35-45 kilograms. These large dogs have very wolf-like qualities; with wolfish faces, large feet, thick bones, and proportioned, muscular bodies.

Coat

These elegant-looking dogs have double coats; with a thick undercoat and a medium-lengthed overcoat. There are a variety of colors such as tri-sable, cream, black sable, gold sable and silver sable. Their tails and ears are usually black-tipped, and they usually have black saddles on their backs like the German Shepherd Dog.

Character

American Alsatian2                 The American Alsatian is a great companion dog that is low energy and has a low prey drive. This means that they are suitable to live in almost any environment, be it a home with a yard, or even an apartment, as long as they get ample daily exercise. They mustn?t be kept outdoors all the time, though, as their thick coats can cause them to easily overheat.  American Alsatians are highly intelligent and respond well to positive reinforcement training, but are not ideal for dog sports due to lack of drive. They are loyal dogs that love to be around people and do not like to wander away from their owners and their homes.

Temperament

These dogs may look enormous and intimidating, but they have very stable temperaments, because breeders of the American Alsatian make sure to retain their good qualities. These even-tempered dogs are good with children and are indifferent and tolerant of strangers, especially if properly socialized at an early age. They may not be ideal guard dogs as they are very quiet and are quite friendly, generally getting along with people and other dogs. They are very calm and confident dogs that have never been known to show aggression, and are ideal for people who want a relaxed, indoor pet.

Care

American Alsatians shed quite heavily especially during hot seasons, so regular grooming is required. Shaving is also recommended if you live in a place with hot climate. Daily brushing is recommended and occasional bathing, as their coats are very good at repelling dirt. This breed is overall very healthy, one of the only known issues in the American Alsatian is seizures, which just has a 0.5% chance of occurrence. Their life expectancy is between 12 to 14 years.

Training

This breed is highly intelligent and they learn very quickly, but do not do well in dog sports due to their low prey and play drive. They are not so energetic and only engage in play if properly encouraged. Their great temperaments and mellow personalities help them excel as therapy dogs.

Activity

Although daily walks are still important in order for this breed to stay balanced, vigorous or intense exercise is not required, as these dogs are naturally calm both outdoors and indoors.
