Goldendoodle Temperament

How to Adopt – Rescue and Rehoming Goldendoodles1

Buying  brand new shoes, especially if it is on sale seemed to be an easy choice. It is quite tempting. After all, consumerism pushes us to seek for something brand new. This is not bad per se but sometimes we have to rethink your choices and have to look around what is already within your reach or you use again the shoes cramped in your rack.

This is in the same logic we would like to apply to dogs here. This comparison might sound too weird or illogical. But what is the point we’re driving at?

Instead of buying a brand new Goldendoodle, you might want to consider adopting rescued ones. Goldendoodles, is a designer breed but it does not mean they are limited edition. You might be surprised that several shelters have Goldendoodles on their stead. And these are waiting to find a new place and a new family.

There were a lot of debates when Usher bought his $12,000 Goldendoodle at an auction. Some wrote harsh comments saying that amount could have helped hundreds or thousands of dogs in local shelters. While there are those who supported his cause as the money in exchange of the brand new pup now named as Poppy Raymond was used to build schools in less developed countries.

So did the idea of pet adoption make you interested? Then you have to consider this Guide for Pet Adoption.

1. When you decide, make a commitment. In the same way that you will treat a new child.

2. Goldedoddles’ lifespan can be 10 – 15 years. Be prepared to commit a lifetime with your pet.  You will decide based on your pet’s needs too.

3. If you are renting or living in an apartment, make sure in advance if pets are allowed in your area.

4. Consider your pet’s safety. If you need to raise your fence higher or lower depending on your pet’s need, you have to do it.

5. Pets are not disposable.

6. Consider your lifestyle, your needs and wants, and what will be appropriate for you.

7.  Do your research on the breed of the dog you want or will be adopting. Never decide just because you were smitten, by the puppy’s eyes. Some breeds have very different needs.

8. If you will be getting or adopting a pet for your children, you will take responsibility of it. You will have to teach and show to your children the ways of taking care a new pet.

9. Adjustment period with your new pet (whether it is brand new or rescued) will take time. Be patient.

10. Dogs are active and quite playful. Provide them a space to run around and to play with them.

So to help you, we will outline several pros and cons  of adoption:

PROS

1.  You will be paying less– registration is more expensive than adoption paper for the dogs. Though if you are planning to breed a dog out of your pup, then it is out of the question now as certification is none for the rescued ones.

2. You will be helping out one dog out of euthanasia. Since more and more dogs are being abandoned and rescued, shelters are getting cramped and saving one dog and providing him/her a chance for a better life.

3. Supporting a cause and welfare for stray animals in the community. Once you will learn about adoption, you will learn more and feel good about your choice. There are many ways to help animal shelters- donation, fundraising and being a volunteer.

4. You will realize that there are dogs that will melt your heart and will overpower your need for a new one. You think that getting a puppy is what you want but who knows, when you go to the dog shelter, you will find a mature Goldendoodle that will suit your personality.

5. You might find or reunite a lost dog with its original owner. There is several cases of reunion stories between lost dogs and their owners.

CONS

1. Training and bonding with your new found dog will take more time. Most in shelters are already grown-up dogs and training will surely be a challenge.

2. If you are looking for a specific breed or generation of Goldendoodle, you may not find it in the animal shelters.

3. Behavior of dog might turn out very differently from the shelter and when you get it at home. So be prepared. Adjustment between you two will take some time.

4. You will need several pieces of paperwork for adoption and you might find yourself frustrated with the bureaucracy of publicly-owned shelter.

5. You may have to wait before you claim the dog that you wish to adopt as shelters require a time for decision-making as well as for owners to reclaim their lost dogs. Shelter staff may also ask a lot of questions and may conduct survey of your home if you’re a suitable owner.

So after weighing all of the choices, both pros and cons, and you really decided to go for rescue and rehoming of dogs, then we will help you out on the next big challenge: how to adopt ? How to adopt a Goldendoodle of your dream?

Adopt a Pet.com has a wide array of choices for people looking for a pet, whether it is a dog, cat or other pets (parrot, rabbit, etc). You can use the Search Bar to look for the pet you want. As for the Goldendoodle you wanted so much, chances are you will not find a puppy. Fret not as dogs aging 4-8 weeks are still adorable and can be trained.

When you will be having a Goldendoodle, especially a puppy you have to take into consideration the time you and your family will spend with it. Since it is a very sociable animal, it will surely need human companion.  Part of the bonding with the newly adopted pup is the training. If it still a puppy, housebreaking and toilet training will be cumbersome. Remember, the puppy’s bladder is still not fully developed so it will be needing to pee more. And you have to train it to pee outside, but if it is a puppy, it cannot still control its bowel movement, unlike the adult one.  Shelter dogs are mostly potty trained.

Do you have the patience and commitment to housetrain a new pup?  Dogs need consistency so you will be making a strict schedule with your dog like an early morning routine of exercise comprising walk, run and even swimming.

While we all swoon with the cuteness of puppies, you have to take all the whining and all-night baring for the new few days or weeks!  Puppies will take everything it will laid its mouth on. And a Goldendoodle puppy is not suited for small children.

Puppies need more attention than its adult counterparts. Many Goldendoodle rescue and shelter homes already developed a certain characteristic. Adult Goldendoodle that were abandoned, lost or rescued is eager to  please you.
